Mohammed S. Dajani Daoudi is a Palestinian scholar born in Jerusalem where he currently lives. He was the founding director of the American Studies Graduate Program and General Director of Libraries at al-Quds University in Jerusalem. In 2007, he established the Wasatia moderate Islamic movement, which aims at promoting peace, moderation, reconciliation, coexistence, and interfaith dialogue. He gained international recognition for his extensive record in advancing awareness concerning peace education and Holocaust education. In March 2014, he became the center of heated outbursts in Palestine and the social networks for leading 27 Palestinian students on a visit to the Auschwitz Nazi death concentration camp in Poland. The Palestinian public outcry, university campus demonstrations, and death threats pressured him to resign from his posts at the university. He is currently the founding director of the Wasatia Academic Institute which in cooperation with the European University in Flensburg, Germany, established The Wasatia Graduate School for Tolerance and Reconciliation, an interdisciplinary doctorate program on the topics of reconciliation, moderation, empathy, tolerance, conflict resolution, and ethics.

The workshop will address the role of dialogue, diplomacy, and direct communication between Israelis and Palestinians in paving the road to reconciliation and peace. It would include a discussion of how feelings of empathy for the suffering of the other would affect the tendency to reconcile with the other in conflict. Using his personal experiences and narratives, the speaker will explore his journey from extremism to moderation and his Wasatia philosophy to achieve reconciliation, conflict resolution and peace.
